Solar panel cleaning and maintenance in Nigeria's harmattan
How harmattan dust affects solar output in Nigeria, how to clean panels safely, and the simple maintenance routine that protects a system year-round.

From roughly November to March, harmattan dust settles on panels across northern Nigeria and much of the south. A dusty array produces noticeably less energy, and the batteries start each evening less full. The fix is simple, but it has to be done safely.
How to clean
- Clean early in the morning or late afternoon, when panels are cool — cold water on hot glass can stress it.
- Use clean water and a soft brush or sponge on an extension pole. No detergents, abrasives or pressure washers.
- Never stand or walk on panels. If the roof is not safely accessible, have the installer do it.
- During heavy harmattan, check monthly; in the rainy season, rain usually does the job.
Beyond cleaning
- Watch the monitoring app for output falling faster than dust explains.
- Keep the battery and inverter area ventilated and free of stored items.
- Have connections, surge protection and earthing checked periodically by a qualified technician.
- Record changes — new loads such as an extra AC shift what the system has to deliver.
