How solar power works for a Nigerian home

A plain explanation of panels, inverter, battery, grid and generator — and how they work together to keep a Nigerian home running.

A home solar system has four parts that work as one: panels, an inverter, a battery and the protection that ties them to your wiring. Understanding what each does makes it much easier to judge a quotation.

The four parts

A typical day

In the morning the panels start supplying the house and charging the battery. By afternoon the battery should be full. After sunset the battery carries the evening load. If the grid is on, the inverter can use it; if it is off, the house keeps running from the battery, with the generator as a last resort instead of the first.

What determines backup hours

Backup time depends on the battery size and the loads connected — air-conditioning uses far more than lights and fans. A good installer sizes the battery to what you actually run at night and confirms it at a site survey.
