Generator fuel costs vs solar in Nigeria: how to compare them honestly

Most fuel-vs-solar comparisons start from estimates. Here is how to compare a generator-led operation against an engineered solar-plus-storage plan using…

The power you use is visible. The cost of unreliable power often is not. When a Nigerian business compares its generator against solar, the comparison usually starts in the wrong place: a fuel receipt on one side and a salesman's savings promise on the other.

Neither number is a decision-grade input. The fuel receipt understates the generator — servicing, breakdown repairs, staff time and interrupted work never appear on it — and an unconditional savings percentage overstates the alternative, because nobody can promise a percentage for a site they have not measured.

What the generator really costs

A generator's cost has at least five components: fuel, servicing, repairs, the operational losses of every changeover, and the staff time bent around it. Most operations can only produce a number for the first one.

That is not a bookkeeping failure — it is how the cost hides. The servicing invoice lands in maintenance, the spoiled batch in production, the overtime in payroll. No single line says 'unreliable power'.

What a measured comparison looks like

An honest comparison needs three measured facts: how much of your load actually runs on generator and when; which loads must never stop; and what your supply quality is doing to equipment. A 7-day logger study at the main distribution board produces all three.

With those measurements, an engineered plan can be priced as an itemised quotation — equipment, balance of system, installation and commissioning listed separately — and compared against the full generator cost, not just the fuel line. The comparison then belongs to you: your data, your loads, your numbers.

The question to ask any provider

If a proposal arrives before a measurement, it is an estimate wearing a suit. Ask one question: 'which of these numbers did you measure on my site?' The answer tells you whether you are buying engineering or optimism.
